Vlaric Shard, Relic of the Past
Photoshop
February 2010

This image was created for the Chaotic Trading Card Game and animated show.

Chaotic Lore:
"This was created by Vlaric in Perim's distant past when Tom time travels in episode 173. Vlaric (and Tom) sneak into a huge subterranean chamber filled with precious gemstones and various crystals belonging to the sinister creature Kaal. Vlaric commands Tom to fill a bag, while he straps a shard of crystal to his wrist with a leather thong/strap after which he tries outa magical earth attack that becomes amplified by the shard. This is the original Vlaric Shard, after which the much used and refined Vlaric Shard battlegear were named."

Artist Comments: While working on props for the Chaotic Animated show and Trading Card Game I was assinged a Crystal shard. Since crystal shards are the most common props in the Chaotic Universe, I was challenged with the task of illustrating one without it looking like you have seen it before. To do this I referenced my own left hand holding a cell phone while painting on a wacom tablet with my right and then spent time focusing on trying to capture the transparent qualities of crystal. I looked at Broken Glass and gemstones for additional ideas untill I finally finished the piece as shown above. I also painted the crystal texture on somewhere around 40 to 50 different layers to capture the effect I was after. I completed this image in about 6 hours.
